How to Use Colour with Confidence in Your Home Interior
Words by Becca Who, Artist & Designer
Learning to trust your own instinct for colour
For many of us, colour is something we admire before we know how to embrace it.
We might find ourselves drawn to a deep emerald, captivated by a rich plum, or completely enchanted by a vibrant botanical print - yet still wonder how those colours might find their place within our own homes. The hesitation is natural: What if it's too much? What if I tire of it? What if I get it wrong?
These questions are more common than we might think. Choosing colour for our homes can feel like a very personal decision and, after years of seeing carefully styled neutral interiors presented as the safe choice, it is understandable to feel that incorporating bolder colours could be a little trickier.
But colour has never been something to fear or something that requires a special skill. Like art itself, it is something we discover through feeling, curiosity and experience.✧
Our homes being deeply personal places where we gather, celebrate, relax and create memories, they should reflect the things that inspire us, the colours that move us and how we want to feel in the space.
The truth is that using colour beautifully isn't about following rules - it's about creating a home that feels like you.
The most beautiful colours are often the ones that speak to us before we can explain why.
Begin with what you love
Rather than asking which colours are on trend, ask yourself a different question: Which colours make me feel something?
Perhaps it's the dramatic depth of midnight blue, reminiscent of evening walks - or the warmth of ochre, echoing late summer grasses. It might be the faded terracotta facades of Venice or the jewel tones reflected in the waters of the Grand Canal.✧
Colour carries memories, emotions and atmosphere in ways that often reach us long before we can explain why. Trust that instinct. The colours that continue to draw you in are rarely an accident.
The colours we are naturally drawn to are often little clues to the atmosphere we want to create around us. When you choose from feeling, your home begins to tell your own story and to truly reflect you.
Let one piece lead the way
If decorating with colour feels overwhelming, you don't need to redesign an entire room overnight.
Instead, begin with one piece that genuinely inspires you. A beautifully patterned fabric, statement cushions, an expressive feature wallpaper or a favourite artwork - each of these can become the starting point for everything else. Rather than searching endlessly for matching shades, allow your chosen piece to suggest a palette naturally.
Nature does this effortlessly; a woodland scene contains countless greens, earthy browns, soft greys and unexpected flashes of colour, all existing harmoniously together. Interiors can embrace that same layered richness without feeling chaotic.
One thoughtful colourful choice in a space often provides all the direction you need.✧
Remember that colour isn't only bright
When we think of bold interiors, we often imagine vibrant colours competing for attention. Yet richness can be found just as easily in darker, moodier palettes.
Colour doesn't always ask to be loud - sometimes it simply invites you to linger.
Deep forest greens, burgundy, deepest blues and warm chocolate browns are some of my favourites to create spaces that feel cocooning, elegant and dramatic. These hues wrap a room in atmosphere rather than shouting for attention.✧
Create moments of rest
A colourful home doesn't require every surface to compete. Just as music is as much about the pauses as the notes, interiors benefit from moments of calm. Richly patterned fabric or wallpaper may sit beautifully alongside painted walls, natural wood or simple ceramics. Layers of texture in a space allows colour to breathe, creating balance without diminishing personality.
A colourful home is not about filling every space; it is about creating harmony between moments of expression and moments of calm.
Build your home over time
Some of the most soulful interiors are never truly finished but rather they evolve gently, collecting treasures along the way; a reupholstered chair discovered at an antique fair, cushions sewn from a treasured fabric or a wallpaper chosen years ago that still brings joy each morning.
When we allow our homes to grow with us, they become rich with stories as well as beauty. There is no urgency to complete every room at once. In fact, taking your time often leads to spaces with greater character and authenticity.
Choose pieces that you'll continue to love long after passing trends have faded.
Let your home reflect you
The most memorable interiors are rarely the ones that follow every design rule - they are the homes that quietly reveal the people who live within them.
This might be a favourite colour chosen simply because it lifts your spirits or a pattern that reminds you of walks in the countryside. Layers collected over many years, each carrying a memory, a moment or a piece of your creative journey.
Colour has an extraordinary ability to shape how a space feels. It can bring comfort, energy, warmth or wonder. More importantly, it can help to transform a house into a home - and a space that feels deeply personal.
